ETYMOLOGY
Etymologists think it comes from an old German word via Dutch. Kip (or Kyppe, or Kippe) was a leather hide out of which a bag for travelling was made. To kip out was to take your bag and stay away from home. Kipping out of course would be shortened to kipping, and kipping in a place that you paid for or were a guest in would involve, at some point, sleeping somewhere.
