Erebus was one of the primordial deities in Greek mythology, born out of the primeval void, Chaos. It was the personification of the deep darkness and shadows.
The perceived meaning of Erebus is “darkness”; the first recorded instance of it was “place of darkness between earth and Hades”.
According to the Greek oral poet Hesiod’s Theogony, Erebus is the offspring of Chaos, and the brother of Nyx, by whom he is the father of Aether and Hemera.
